When The Facts Lean Against You…

Increase the seriousness of the accusation, of course. From the grand anti-Republican New York Times tradition- the one that brought you Iraq = Vietnam, Frank Rich begins the “This is Watergate!” meme with his Times piece this morning. Rich’s desire to undermine an ongoing war, and to do so through nothing more than personal attacks (“Trashing is in his nature,” the first paragraph says of Rove), circumstantial evidence, ignorance of every piece of exculpatory evidence, and cheesy literary allusions (“Mr. Wilson is at most a Rosencrantz or Guildenstern,”) is cowardice on par with the Act I Hamlet.

Every war president in United States history has ‘sold’ his war to Americans. Every one has accentuated the threat and aggrandized the cause. Even among leaders: Churchill, the case could easily be made, misled Roosevelt into war! But with people like Frank Rich in positions of such rip and roar, one wonders if the idea of making the world safe for democracy, if the idea of national defense, is dead. At least for Republican White Houses.
