when did the war on terror begin?

Jay Tea posts an interesting poll: When did the war on terror begin? The choices he offers are 2001, 1993, 1979, 1972, 1968, and 1947.

He omits, though, the Islamic fundamentalist attack on our military in 2000. That may be a legitimate choice as well.
